"The survey, which queried 500 home-based adult patients and 500 paid and unpaid caregivers, showed that both patients and caregivers are overwhelmed and stressed. Both groups equally (31%) blame each other when there is a delay in receiving life-saving medical equipment. Findings further exhibit that many patients are left in the dark, unaware of any coordinated assistance services made available by their health insurers. An overwhelming majority (77%) of the patients also reported that they are the primary contact for their medical suppliers. The survey also disclosed that 59% of patients received unreliable or poor-quality medical supplies and equipment."

CMS Proposes Capped Rental Rule for DME -- HME Business:

"The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid funding have proposed a rule to rent “routinely purchased” DME items falling under the three-year minimum lifetime requirement and that have allowables of more than $150.

Under the proposed rule, Medicare would only purchase an item outright if its statistics show that the agency purchased the item 75 percent or more of the time during the period of July 1986 through June 1987. If not, those items would be reimbursed on a 13-month capped rental basis."

However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has long been concerned that consumers may sometimes be literally left to their own devices—depending upon medical devices they might not know how to operate and for which they might not understand the safety risks.

For example, a woman with kidney failure got cat hair in her dialysis tubing, resulting in peritonitis, a life-threatening abdominal infection. ". . . death certificates and hospital emergency room visits from 2003 through May 2012 shows that 150 mostly older adults died after they became trapped in bed rails. Over nearly the same time period, 36,000 mostly older adults — about 4,000 a year — were treated in emergency rooms with bed rail injuries. Officials at the FDA and the commission said the data probably understated the problem since bed rails are not always listed as a cause of death by nursing homes and coroners, or as a cause of injury by emergency room doctors.

Experts who have studied the deaths say they are avoidable. While the F.D.A. issued safety warnings about the devices in 1995 . . ."
