AAM White Paper Breaks Down Drug Shortage Crisis

According to the article:

"A white paper created by the Association for Accessible Medicines (AAM) explaining the myriad of causes that have resulted in mass drug shortages around the world proposed several actions that stakeholders can take to address current challenges and prevent future ones.

“Policymakers, healthcare providers, and manufacturers each play an important role in reducing drug shortages, and all should be cautious of short-term patches that create long-term barriers to robust generic competition and patient access to low-cost medicines,” wrote the authors."

AHRQ Report on CPAP Devices - Consider The Ramifications

There's a lot to take in here.  You'll need to read the entire article to unpack the findings.

According to the article:

"Spoiler alert: The report, Long-Term Health Outcomes in Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Systematic Review of Comparative Studies Evaluating Positive Airway Pressure and the Validity of Breathing Measures as Surrogate Outcomes, does not answer the main clinical question it asks. Rather, for each outcome—cardiovascular disease, driving accidents, diabetes, mental health, cognitive function, quality of life, and many others—it details why the evidence is inadequate, over and over again."

According to the article:

"The survey, which queried 500 home-based adult patients and 500 paid and unpaid caregivers, showed that both patients and caregivers are overwhelmed and stressed. Both groups equally (31%) blame each other when there is a delay in receiving life-saving medical equipment. Findings further exhibit that many patients are left in the dark, unaware of any coordinated assistance services made available by their health insurers. An overwhelming majority (77%) of the patients also reported that they are the primary contact for their medical suppliers. The survey also disclosed that 59% of patients received unreliable or poor-quality medical supplies and equipment."

Scrutinizing Drug Wholesaler Pricing

Read the full source article:
Drug Wholesalers Elude Congress Scrutiny in Pricing Debate (1) - Bloomberg Law

According to the news article:

"Wholesalers that distribute prescription drugs to pharmacies need scrutiny as Congress investigates the roles of supply chain middlemen in drug pricing, analysts say."

"Wholesalers have gotten limited attention on Capitol Hill, even as tackling high drug costs has become a major priority among key lawmakers in both chambers. Various entities can benefit from higher list prices from drugmakers, researchers and analysts say. Any examination of how drug prices are formed should include wholesalers and all other components of the supply chain, they argue."

HME Companies Must Innovate

According the article:

"In response to retailers like Best Buy trying to wedge their way into home care, one respondent wrote, “HME companies must innovate, or their products and services will become low-margin commodities.”

“Innovators and disruptors will always cross the line – it’s integral [to] the process,” the respondent wrote. “For example, it is now common for payers to provide physician primary care services and patient monitoring, so for a company like Best Buy that has been selling health wearables for years, the apparent intrusion into HME is really a normal course of business. Atrium-Best Buy patients and stakeholders will help steer the fulfillment process for HME products and services, like it or not.” "
