AHRQ Report on CPAP Devices - Consider The Ramifications

There's a lot to take in here.  You'll need to read the entire article to unpack the findings.

    According to the article:

"Spoiler alert: The report, Long-Term Health Outcomes in Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Systematic Review of Comparative Studies Evaluating Positive Airway Pressure and the Validity of Breathing Measures as Surrogate Outcomes, does not answer the main clinical question it asks. Rather, for each outcome—cardiovascular disease, driving accidents, diabetes, mental health, cognitive function, quality of life, and many others—it details why the evidence is inadequate, over and over again."

Caregivers, Patients Trade Blame for Equipment Delays, Study Finds - HomeCareMag

    • If you need a California HMDR Exemptee, they'll need CDPH-approved training to apply for their Home Medical Device Retail Exemptee license application.  Learn more & buy: California Exemptee Certification: California Exemptee Certification

    According to the article:

"The survey, which queried 500 home-based adult patients and 500 paid and unpaid caregivers, showed that both patients and caregivers are overwhelmed and stressed. Both groups equally (31%) blame each other when there is a delay in receiving life-saving medical equipment. Findings further exhibit that many patients are left in the dark, unaware of any coordinated assistance services made available by their health insurers. An overwhelming majority (77%) of the patients also reported that they are the primary contact for their medical suppliers. The survey also disclosed that 59% of patients received unreliable or poor-quality medical supplies and equipment."

    HME Companies Must Innovate

    Updated November 18, 2025

    The original link broke.

--  the original post follows below  ---

    According the article:

"In response to retailers like Best Buy trying to wedge their way into home care, one respondent wrote, “HME companies must innovate, or their products and services will become low-margin commodities.”

“Innovators and disruptors will always cross the line – it’s integral [to] the process,” the respondent wrote. “For example, it is now common for payers to provide physician primary care services and patient monitoring, so for a company like Best Buy that has been selling health wearables for years, the apparent intrusion into HME is really a normal course of business. Atrium-Best Buy patients and stakeholders will help steer the fulfillment process for HME products and services, like it or not.” "

Pulse Oximeter Accuracy and Limitations - FDA.gov

Doctors have long known that pulse oximeters are less accurate in estimating blood oxygen levels in non-white patients, but the discrepancies were considered insignificant. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed some of the real dangers of these flaws, as the devices gave falsely high oxygen readings in patients with dark skin.

"The FDA announced a virtual meeting of the CDRH Anesthesiology and Respiratory Therapy Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee on November 1, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern Time. For additional meeting details, see the meeting announcement in the Federal Register.

The committee will discuss ongoing concerns that pulse oximeters may be less accurate in individuals with darker skin pigmentations. The committee will also discuss factors that may affect pulse oximeter accuracy and performance, the available evidence about the accuracy of pulse oximeters, recommendations for patients and health care providers, and the amount, and type of data that should be provided by manufacturers to assess pulse oximeter accuracy and to guide other regulatory actions as needed."

FDA Issues Safety Communication About Philips Recall - Sleep Review

    According to the article:

"The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting people who use Philips Respironics ventilators, BiPAP, and CPAP machines and their health care providers that Philips Respironics has recalled certain devices (see table below) due to potential health risks. The polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) sound abatement foam, which is used to reduce sound and vibration in these affected devices, may break down and potentially enter the device’s air pathway. If this occurs, black debris from the foam or certain chemicals released into the device’s air pathway may be inhaled or swallowed by the person using the device.

If you use one of these affected devices (see table below), talk to your health care provider to decide on a suitable treatment for your condition and follow the recommendations listed below.

Philips Respironics is recalling the following affected devices manufactured between 2009 and April 26, 2021."

    According to the article:

"Over the past several decades, Americans have increasingly benefited from in-home technology, which can extend lifespans and enable more people to stay in their own homes. But the expanding array of such devices — including home oxygen machines, medication nebulizers, home dialysis, infusion pumps, and electric wheelchairs — all depend on a reliable power supply."

" . . . a study published earlier this year in the journal Epidemiology which found that rentals of oxygen equipment had nearly tripled from 2008 to 2018, based on data from more than 243,000 Kaiser Permanente patients."

AHRQ: Studies Fail to Show Long-Term Benefit for CPAP - MedPage Today

According to this article, AHRQ: Studies Fail to Show Long-Term Benefit for CPAP -  Sleep apnea specialists dumbfounded at critique of "gold standard" treatment:

"The big fear that I have, and many of my colleagues have, is that the way this report is worded could easily be misinterpreted as saying that prescribing CPAP doesn't improve these (long-term) outcomes, so we shouldn't be paying for it," said David Rapoport, MD, who directs the sleep medicine research program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

He said CPAP is widely recognized as the most effective treatment for improving OSA symptoms, such as snoring and daytime sleepiness.

"Nothing else even comes close," he said. "CPAP s really a remarkable treatment for addressing the breathing disorder associated with obstructive sleep apnea. But it has to be used, and compliance remains a big issue."
