According to the article:

"As COVID-19 cases spike across the country, HME providers are seeing a spike in demand for home oxygen therapy, so much so that they’re worrying about their supply of concentrators."

"“We’re really struggling with the volume because of the delays in shipping from manufacturers,” said Irene Magee, vice president and director of Green Island, N.Y.-based Northeast Home Medical Equipment.

Providers are also juggling a wide range of patient therapy needs for a disease with a lot of unknowns. Some patients only need oxygen for a day or two, while others are longer term or have higher-flow needs."

[DME] Providers feel burned in California - HME News

"California’s Medicaid program, Medi-Cal, may find itself in a bind for HME providers if a drastic reimbursement cut goes through as planned, say industry stakeholders.
To comply with the 21st Century Cures Act, the Department of Health Care Services has proposed paying 80% of Medicare’s non-rural fee schedule amounts for most DME. For providers in the state, who are currently reimbursed at the 2016 Medicare fee schedule amounts, that’s a cut of up to 60%."

ATS Report Finds Urgent Problems with Supplemental Oxygen Services - Thoracic.org

Read the full press release:   ATS Report Finds Urgent Problems with Supplemental Oxygen Services - Thoracic.org

"In “Optimizing Home Oxygen Therapy: An Official American Thoracic Society Workshop Report,” 26 physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, patients and representatives of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), oxygen suppliers, the Food and Drug Administration and patient advocacy groups detail the shortcomings of the current system of providing supplemental oxygen to 1.5 million adults living in the United States.
The panel was unanimous in its finding that delivery of home oxygen services has worsened since the onset of CMS’s Competitive Bidding Program nearly a decade ago.
The workshop authors reviewed available scientific oxygen studies and results of a 2017 survey of nearly 2,000 supplemental oxygen users conducted by the ATS Nursing Assembly."

Policymakers must fix problems with Medicare’s competitive bidding program for home oxygen therapy | The Hill

Read the full article:  Policymakers must fix problems with Medicare’s competitive bidding program for home oxygen therapy | The Hill:

"The end result is that patients are finding it more difficult to access the treatments they need.  According to Medicare’s data, the number of oxygen rental patients declined by 33 percent between 2008 and 2014, while the number of COPD diagnoses increased by 59 percent. Because the only treatment for COPD in its later stages is home oxygen therapy, the increase in diagnosis and the decrease in patients using the services suggests that patients aren’t getting access to the care necessary to remain at home."

Respiratory Audits: Under the Microscope -- HME Business

Read the full article: Respiratory Audits: Under the Microscope -- HME Business:

"Van Halem: It all comes down to communication and education with the referral sources. Unfortunately, CMS puts that burden onto the supplier and most physicians don’t know the documentation requirements. There should be some sort of internal QA or prior approval process. These days, it is not enough to just request documentation — you should also review it and determine whether the patient qualifies. Many suppliers are now being forced to turn away patients and transfer liability to them because they can’t get the documentation that they need to substantiate reimbursement."

Medicare Cuts Will Disproportionately Harm COPD Patients - Morning Consult

Read the full article: Medicare Cuts Will Disproportionately Harm COPD Patients - Morning Consult:

"CMS has chosen to deeply reduce Medicare payments for the home oxygen services required to keep COPD patients healthy and out of the hospital and other costly facilities.  On January 1, CMS began applying the competitive bid rates used in urban areas to rural and other non-competitive bid areas.  This policy is being phased-in over only a 6-month period, taking full effect on July 1 and resulting in a 30-50 percent cut to home respiratory therapy. Additionally, another set of cuts of approximately 18 percent was just applied on July 1."

Gain Referrals by Reducing Readmissions | HomeCare Magazine

"Effective this year, Section 3025 of the Affordable Care Act penalizes hospitals for COPD readmissions. During the next three years, hospitals will be charged a 3 percent penalty on all Medicare reimbursements for patients readmitted within 30 days of discharge.

The reality of an industry average 25 percent readmission rate creates a captive audience for real discussions on better therapy. These meaningful conversations can save hospitals massive amounts of money and generate more patient referrals. Set yourself apart with results-driven programs that can protect hospitals from these new financial risks."

"To test their theory that facial hair places oxygen therapy users at a higher risk for burns, the researchers set up mannequins with and without human hair mustaches, outfitted them with the nasal tubing and exposed them to a spark.

The tubing on the mustached models ignited while those without mustaches did not, suggesting that concentrated oxygen together with kindling in the form of facial hair is a dangerously flammable combination."
