Hackers targeting groups involved in COVID-19 vaccine distribution, IBM warns - Reuters

According to the article:

"IBM’s cybersecurity unit said it had detected an advanced group of hackers working to gather information about different aspects of the cold chain, using meticulously crafted booby-trapped emails sent in the name of an executive with Haier Biomedical, a Chinese cold chain provider that specializes in vaccine transport and biological sample storage.  ...

The hackers went through “an exceptional amount of effort,” said IBM analyst Claire Zaboeva, who helped draft the report. Hackers researched the correct make, model, and pricing of various Haier refrigeration units, Zaboeva said."

Florida’s Adoption of Federal Exemptions for Wholesale Drug Distribution May Benefit Pharmacies, Practitioners and Hospitals | Akerman LLP - Health Law Rx - JDSupra

Read the full article: Florida’s Adoption of Federal Exemptions for Wholesale Drug Distribution May Benefit Pharmacies, Practitioners and Hospitals | Akerman LLP - Health Law Rx - JDSupra:

"The 2016 Florida Legislature enacted substantial legislation (Ch. 2016-212, Laws of Florida) to bring Florida’s Drug and Cosmetic Act (Ch. 499, Florida Statutes) in line with the federal Drug Supply Chain and Security Act (“DSCSA”). Since the DSCSA preempts state law, the changes were necessary to avoid confusion between the state and federal exemptions to the term “wholesale distribution”."

"Last month, Genentech angered hospitals and academic medical centers around the country by changing distribution for three big-selling cancer medicines. Until recently, dozens of wholesalers stocked the drugs."

Genentech's distribution change for cancer drugs upsets hospitals | Modern Healthcare

Read the full article: Genentech's distribution change for cancer drugs upsets hospitals | Modern Healthcare:

"Drugmaker Genentech is changing the way it ships three high-profile cancer drugs to hospitals, which are concerned that the new process will grossly inflate their already high costs and potentially affect patient care. Genentech contends the change is designed to ensure patient safety and access to the drugs involved.

In a Sept. 16 letter to hospital pharmacy directors (PDF), Genentech, a U.S. subsidiary of Swiss healthcare giant Roche, said effective Oct. 1, hospitals can receive Avastin, Herceptin and Rituxan only through six authorized specialty distributors. The approved companies are ASD Healthcare, BioSolutionsDirect, Cardinal Health Specialty Distribution, McKesson Plasma and Biologics, Morris & Dickson Specialty Distribution and Smith Medical Partners.

For hospitals, this means they will have to contract with one of those specialty distributors if they want to continue receiving those three cancer drugs. Previously, hospitals purchased the drugs through wholesale distributors, which offer hospitals discounts based on purchase volume."

HDMA survey of specialty distribution: Sales to physicians' offices have dropped by 66% - Pharmaceutical Commerce

HDMA survey of specialty distribution: sales to physicians' offices have dropped by 66% - Pharmaceutical Commerce:

"A recap helps explain: Specialty pharmaceuticals differ from traditional pharma products in that they tend to be “high touch”—needing numerous ancillary services such as infusion, monitored dispensing, REMS, or followup care. As they tend to be expensive, the reimbursement / prior authorization / patient-support questions are also complex. Oncology products, in particular, have traditionally been purchased under a “buy and bill” model by physicians’ practices, but this is fading (as the HDMA date show) in place of sales to specialty pharmacies and health systems."

SecuringPharma - California Board of Pharmacy weighs in on RxTEC proposal:

"The California Board of Pharmacy in the US has written an open letter to Representative Henry Waxman calling for a federal approach to pharmaceutical traceability that provides the same or greater protection to the public as its electronic pedigree system due to come into effect between 2015 and 2017.

The letter to Waxman - who serves as ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee - also takes a swipe at the Pharmaceutical Traceability Enhancement Code (RxTEC) system enshrined in the Securing Pharmaceutical Distribution Integrity Act of 2012, saying that it is a "less robust, and less secure, supply chain infrastructure.""

Counterfeit drugs
Counterfeit drugs (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
American Pharmacists Association - Article: - Role of the pharmacist in preventing distribution of counterfeit meds

"Summary: The taskforce recommends that pharmacists (1) purchase medications from known, reliable sources; (2) warn patients of the dangers of purchasing medications over the Internet; (3) confirm with distributors that products were purchased from manufacturers or other reliable sources; (4) monitor counterfeit product alerts; (5) examine products for suspicious appearance; (6) work with the pharmaceutical industry, distributors, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to close gaps in the supply chain, especially for drugs in short supply; (7) use scanning technology in the pharmacy as part of a prescription verification process; (8) educate themselves, coworkers, and patients about the risks of counterfeit medications; and (9) report suspicious medications to FDA, the distributor, and the manufacturer.

Conclusion: The consequence of a patient receiving a counterfeit medication in the United States could be catastrophic, and pharmacists must play an active role in preventing such an event from occurring."
