68% Wouldn't Accept CMS Round 2 Contracts

If offered bidding contracts, 68% of providers say they wouldn't accept | HME News:

"In a recent HME NewsPoll, 68% of providers said they do not plan to accept a CMS contract for Round 2 of competitive bidding. . . .

“A 45% decrease is impossible,” said Jack Lentz, clinical director at Southampton, Pa.-based Respiratory Therapy Services. “In fact, it’s criminal and should be investigated.”

Of the respondents who said they would not accept a contract, 39% said they plan to shift their focus to non-Medicare payers.

“Let the people who made the suicide bids try to live with those rates and the increased audit exposure,” said Terry Racciato, president of San Diego-based SpecialCare."

"More than 30 patient advocacy and consumer groups endorsed a bill in Congress that would replace Medicare's current "competitive bidding" program for durable medical equipment with a better market pricing system that preserves access to homecare. Millions of Americans use medically required durable medical equipment and services at home, including oxygen therapy, wheelchairs, and hospital beds.

The bill, H.R. 6490, was introduced in the House of Representatives by a bipartisan group of lawmakers in September and has gained strong bipartisan support from several dozen members of Congress. The bill would replace the current, controversial bidding program with a more sustainable system, says the American Association for Homecare."

DME Bidding Program To Expand

According to this Bloomberg News article, Medicare Bid Process for Medical Supplies to Expand, "U.S. regulators plan to proceed with a program requiring durable medical equipment suppliers led by Lincare Holdings Inc. (LNCR) and Apria Healthcare Group Inc. to bid to sell to Medicare beneficiaries."

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced the second round of a program that uses competitive bidding to set prices for DME. They plan to expand the program to 91 metropolitan areas by July 2013 and nationwide in 2016. Some companies think that the DME program will cause businesses to close, and make it harder for patients to get timely access to products and supplies.
